A Little Goes a Long Way

“I just don’t have time to workout!”  How many of us have said that before?  I sure know that I’m guilty of saying it and I’m pretty sure many others have too.  Ever wonder how people could spend 2+ hours in the gym without a care in the world?  No kids to run home to or pick up from school, no dinners to make, no emails to reply to and no assignments with end-of-day deadlines to provide.  Sounds like heaven, but realistically we all have some form of responsibilities that has to be taken care of and our priorities differ for everyone.

The good thing about fitness is that you don’t have to spend hours in the gym to get a complete workout… really, you don’t!  You don’t have to run on the treadmill for an hour to have an effective cardio session and you don’t have to lift heavy, heavy weights to build muscle.  There are so many options in fitness and it doesn’t require hours that you don’t have to get your workout in the day.  It just takes a effective exercises that gets your body and heart-rate moving… period.

Let’s start off with cardio… at least 30 min of cardio… that’s it!  Find an activity that gets your heart-rate up… and then back down… then back up again… and finally back down to where you started.  This could be a jog around the neighborhood or park, a group-fitness class like Zumba or just plain old jumping jacks and/or jump rope for 30 min.  Aim for 3 days a week (Let’s say Monday, Wednesday & Friday) where you can just focus on your heart rate and then you can get back to your daily routine of responsibilities.

Next is weight training. So many exercises you can do in just 30 min and you don’t have to target one body part at a time (like who has time for that?!?).  Grab some dumbbells or a medicine ball and combine 2 exercises in one.  For example, you can do a Squat and Overhead Press or Lunge and Bicep Curl just to give you some ideas.  Check out my video below of other ideas of exercises you can do that hits both upper body and lower body at the same time.  Aim for 2 days a week (Tuesday & Thursday) to start off with and complete each exercises with 3 sets of 15 reps.  Find a weight that you can hold during each movement and challenges you well.  Increase the weight as you become stronger.

By implementing just 30 min out of your busy day to get your workout in, you will see the changes over time so don’t give up!  Remember, a little bit goes a long way.

And another one! I’m sorry but I am just having way too much #fun making videos of my routines I use in my classes.  I tend to laugh at myself when I do something stupid or blank out for a milli-second and you might even see that in this video.

This video was recorded at Upload Fitness (formerly known as Pivotal Fitness) in Fort Lauderdale. Since the switch to the new owner, many changes have been made that makes my home gym now my most favorite gym starting off with the studio color. I mean how fun and energetic is that wall color? According to Empowered by Color‘s websites, “With magenta as your favorite color you seek harmony and balance in every aspect of your life; physically, emotionally and spiritually – magenta helps to release old patterns of thinking and behaving that no longer serve you, helping you to grow and move forward to greater balance.”  The website further states, “With magenta as your favorite color, you love to surround yourself with #beauty as it inspires your #creativity.”

No wonder I love this color so much!  Couldn’t describe me better than this which is probably why I was so drawn to the color when I first walked in.  Now my question is, what’s your favorite color?  What does your favorite color say about you? El Taxi – Pitbull: Zumba with ZZ

This is one of my favorite songs to dance to in my #Zumba classes.  Why? Because my students love it and it gives them the opportunity to really get down and have fun with me which is what I strive for in each of my Zumba classes.

One of the biggest challenges I have faced as an instructor is the location of my classes not being convenient for my followers.  I am originally from Miami now living in Fort Lauderdale and I teach mostly in Broward County and even Palm Beach County (which are the 2 counties north of Miami-Dade County). A majority of Miami residents do not travel outside of the 305 and I don’t blame them.  As for me, to drive to Miami to teach and hour long class is not ideal mostly because traffic is so so bad here.  My point is,  I teach all over the place and it makes it difficult for my followers and even friends to take my class. My students that do come to my class are gym members who live locally, which I love & appreciate my local students so much!

Because of this, I record my choreo to the songs I use for my classes to reach my followers so they can dance with me wherever they are located.  And trust me guys, it’s not to become famous because being famous is not my goal in life.  Believe it or not, I am very introverted and reserved to be famous.  I am a shadow and always been a shadow, but this shadow loves music and dance so I create my craft for the rest to enjoy.  Seeing others enjoy my work makes me feel good which is why I continue despite all the obstacles I’ve encountered.

The Final Results: Fly Girl Edition

After 2 months of personal training with Bobby at The Custom Fitness Institute, the final results are now in.  If you have been following lunasol vida on Instagram, you would have seen the workouts I was doing at my training sessions.  If you haven’t seen it, have no fear because I will be posting it on this blog to recap the type of workouts I did to burn fat & gain muscles.  After this experience, I learned what I have to do to get rid of the stubborn fat that doesn’t want to leave, the proper way to build muscle and can’t wait to share my knowledge to everyone who wants to do the same.

Watch the video and see how much fat has been lost and how much muscle was gained.  Learn why it’s so important to take body measurements rather than weighing yourself on the scale to determine your progress.  And as always, stay focused, stay active and never be afraid to ask for help in reaching your fitness goals.

The Fitness Assessment: Fly Girl Edition

Yes, it’s true… I can dance for hours & run for miles, but ask me to go to the gym to lift weights and I’m lost (and will probably end up in the group-fitness studio instead). It’s not my favorite activity and I’m sure many can relate.

If this sounds familiar, don’t give up! Find a friend who will push you and motivate you to hit the weights. I decided to turn to my friend, Bobby Jackson, who is a professional personal trainer and owner of The Custom Fitness Institute in Pompano Beach, FL. Personal trainers are trained to guide you and help you take your fitness to the next level.

First step to a personal training program should always be a Fitness Assessment. In this video, you will see what a Fitness Assessment is and the proper way to measure your body fat percentage & body mass index (BMI).

Fly Girl Audition Video: Zumba® with ZZ

Now here’s a little story I’ve got to tell, about 2 bad chinos you know so well… ha! (If you know the original rhyme, comment below for a chance to win a special prize from me!)

Well this China (a nickname my hubby calls me) decided to audition for a spot in the Fly Girl 101 session, led by the talented Lisa Marie, at this year’s Zumba® convention. In order to audition, you had to learn the routine she choreographed and add the 2 last counts of 8 of your own stylo to the song “I Wanna Sex You Up” by Color Me Badd…. what?!?! I was all in. I wanted to keep it real to my Miami roots, where graffiti is considered colorful art and bust out my gold hoops, nameplate, cross & chain I’ve had since the 90’s. The only thing is that Miami is 20 min for where I live now and the deadline was like tomorrow. Thank God for #FATVillage in downtown Fort Lauderdale where the art culture is blooming. I waited for Chino (my nickname for my hubby aka Jimmy) to come home from work Thursday evening and off we went to go film the video.

Now it was time to film. The sun was setting but man this weather lately has been super hot & humid so I didn’t want to take too long to record it. The idea was to keep it smooth but hit the movements to make it look clean. I am a bit of a perfectionist and did the routine a couple of times… well… more like several times before I was content with the final product. Jimmy saw them all the same and wanted to call it a day. But my eyes could see when my arms weren’t where they should be, or a movement wasn’t as strong as I wanted it to be. It was the last shot that I was like, ok… this is it… if it’s not “perfect” in my eyes, then there is nothing I can do about it because it’s hot, he’s hungry, and I’m getting tired. The last shot ended up being the one I submitted and most content with. Finally! Let’s go home.

Now time to edit! Not only did I edit the video to add my name and title of the video, I also edited the song to have a short intro and cut the right section of the song that I danced to. Took awhile but I enjoy editing (not always but this one was fun for me!) Uploaded it on YouTube and emailed it as instructed. I was excited more than I was nervous. It was fun to film something I could relate to, something that is totally me, and the style of dance I grew up dancing especially in Miami.

A week later is when I got the email saying, Congratulations FLY GIRL!!! What?!?! Honestly, tears of happiness came as I called Jimmy to share the good news. We did this together and together we celebrated. Now, I’m sharing the good news to my students and followers. Thanks to everyone who encouraged and believed in me. Can’t wait to share on what’s to come.

lunasol vida: Fly Girl Edition

Welcome to lunasol vida! My name is Zule (ZZ) and I am a group-fitness instructor in South Florida who specializes in Zumba® & Mat Pilates. As some of you may know, I recently auditioned to be a Fly Girl for Lisa Marie’s Fly Girl 101 session at this year’s Zumba® Convention (ZinCon) happening July 27th – 30th in Orlando, FL.
